More fun in Ati-atihan, Kalibo Aklan

Kalibo Ati-atihan 2017

Ati-atihan is one of the most spectacular festivals in the country. One which is the famous ati-atihan in Kalibo Aklan. This started centuries back when the Bornean who barter Panay with the natives called Aetas. These aetas or locally known as Ati are a dark skinned people. They celebrated the arrangement with dancing and beating of the drum. In solidarity with the natives the bornean smeared their skin with soot or any substance to look like an ATI thus, gave birth to the ati-atihan celebration.

Ati-atihan in Aklan however appeared with the depiction of the patron saint Sto. Nino which is the image of the child Jesus. The image of Sto. nino was brought by the Spaniards to the country to influence Christianity and thus into Ati-atihan festival.

Ati-atihan begins on the second Monday and culminates on the third Sunday of January. This a long week of celebration. That includes the performances such traditional dances, the loud drum-beating and vibrant music and a colorful costumes. This is participated by municipalities of Aklan.

My Ati-atihan in Kalibo 2017

We have given a chance to get to the street party. Like everybody knows the streets are engrossed with all sorts of rambunctious sad-sad in local term which means street dancing or parade in the streets with steps collaboration with music. Every group participated has each own musical instruments. Like ours from southwest tours, we have our own band who played traditional tempo which all of us have to dance. We go around the designated route as we follow groups ahead of us then followed by another behind us.

During the sad-sad we are given drinks to quench us for the sad-sad is very tiring and desiccating. To some they even have beers and rums while enjoying the sad-sad.
I can no longer hear the chant " Hala Bira, pwera pasma"  because of different music. But i know it still exist to some.

After our sad-sad we were given foods and then we go on our way to find better place to extend our party. I and my co-workers find videokebars since we love singing, then what follows are the history.

This is indeed a dawn to dusk celebration, after having this sad-sad what comes next was a night party where people go to Magsay-say park for another level of partying. \Foods and drinks are offered and people will enjoy the live performances on stage.

This cultural practices is being honored and valued which gave us here in Aklan proud.
